i remember them as beautiful

eventually

the ones closest to me

get too tired

or

too confused to go on

they take

the left fork in the road

alone

and

walk between garbage cans

in dark alleys

at night

they swim

through cold mud

at the bottom of the lake

with

antennas dancing

in the current

above their foreheads

like halos

people wake up

from dreams

and ask me what to do

i just laugh

(this originally appeared in a self-published-at-kinkos chapbook called “mixing cottage cheese and ketchup to make various shades of pink” in june of 2006, which sold no more than two or three copies at quimby‘s)
